THE SPACE DESIGN THE MA.

Ma — the space between. I design the breath that flows
in the gap of Japanese and Latin letters. Before a word is read, it must first have a presence.

One face carrying everything from hairline captions to heavy signage. Drag the slider to travel the weight.

02 — Approach / Philosophy

Letters stand before they are read. To design the ma is to give shape to silence.

Design always begins with the center of gravity of a single letter. Not the weight of a line, nor a fashionable skeleton, but the breath that flows in between one character and the next — I measure that ma, tune it, and sometimes open it wide.

The vertical cadence of Japanese, the horizontal speed of Latin. Only when these two opposing rhythms shake hands on one page does type gain a presence before it is read. What I design is that stillness.

  • 01The ma comes first; the letterform follows.
  • 02Japanese and Latin, equal — neither takes the lead.
  • 03Readability is made of white space.
